Photographing newborn triplets

My experience of photographing multiples for a newborn shoot

So in June 2021 I got to photograph my first ever set of newborn triplets. I am experienced in photographing newborn twins. Triplets was going to be a new venture for me. I remember when mum Gina first got in touch and I was so excited but also questioning my ability to handle not one or two but three precious little ones. I advised I would need to rope another newborn photographer into assisting so we can ensure all baby’s we’re safe and monitored at all times. Even settling baby’s is much easier with another pair of hands. We discussed how she was doing and I loved following her on Instagram, keeping update with her pregnancy and the baby’s arrival.

Tips for photographing multiple newborns

  1. Get an assistant, ideally another newborn photographer who has experience

  2. Make time - block out your diary for that day, a session like this can take longer than a single baby session

  3. Speak to parents about accessories find out if your going to need matching hats, headbands and wraps and give yourself time to acquire those items.

  4. Send Parents a prep guide, for any parent even of just one baby, a good guide should cover all those questions they might want to ask, manage exceptions, ensure they bring everything they need etc.

  5. Pre plan the set ups, I created a list of what set ups I do first what order would flow best and not disturb baby’s too much.

  6. Get some pain relief as your back will ache after this session

  7. Enjoy the experience

Photographing triplets was amazing, I was very lucky the boys were all so sleepy and chilled, but still much more complex than a normal session. Remember as well a lot of multiples twins/triplets will be premeture baby’s so make sure you’ve discussed any health concerns with parents before your session.

It’s important to ask the baby’s parents if they want all the newborn photographs done together or if they would like some individual ones too. In this session although most of the images were shot all together, I did a few individual ones. Meet Jimmy, Jensen & Jaxson.

My studio is generally very warm for newborns but with triplets I did have an extra heater while they were unwrapped, as there’s more bodies to keep warm.

I was lucky enough to have my good friend Rachel (Rachel Clarke photography) to assist me on the day she wasn’t just amazing tag teaming and helping me stay relaxed she also took some gorgeous behind the scene shots of me working, which is a fantastic way to remember this session.

I want to say a massive thank you to Mum Gina and Dad Craig  for choosing me to capture their beautiful boys at such a special milestone. The triplets also featured in OK Magazine where one of my favourite images was used check it out here - Triplets in OK

In March 2022 the boys returned for their cake smash session, which was quite a workout. Now with their budding personalities and bright blue eyes they were such pleasant baby’s to work with. Again with photographing three little ones all at once its so important to remember to have people on hand to assist or get parents to get involved as much as possible. I will be doing another blog post about the triplets return very soon - Watch this space.
